After accessing the extender’s Netgear_ext on various devices, he can enjoy the internet on the fly. But, what if the device accessing your extender indicates a message saying weak security? Does it mean that you’ve failed to do Netgear extender setup? No, it isn’t like. All you are required to do is perk up the security of your wireless range extender. What is the extender’s WiFi security and how to fix the weak one? This article is all about that. So, keep reading.

What is Netgear Extender WiFi Security?

You might be well aware of the fact that a Netgear extender utilizes EM waves to facilitate a high-speed internet connection. These waves are generally on 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio frequencies. It means the way you switch to your favorite FM channel by the hit-and-trial method, similarly, a WiFi intruder can capture and collect all data being transmitted over your Netgear extender network if he/she has enough skills. To give tough competition to those skills, you need to ensure that your WiFi network stays secure from such thieves. For this, the WiFi security standards hidden in the WiFi Settings section of the Netgear extender help the user. These security standards ensure that the data transmission happening over your home network remains encrypted and no one deciphers it.

WEP, WPA, and WPA2 are some security standards that improved with time. The WEP standard being the oldest one has weak security whereas the WPA is considered stronger than that. But, when it comes to offering strong network security, the WPA2 standard is unbeatable as it is a combination of both the formerly introduced networking standards. The next generation namely WPA3 is expected to be launched soon. However, before that, we want you to escalate your Netgear WiFi extender’s security by employing the following techniques.

How to Fix Netgear Extender Weak WiFi Security?

  1. Password Protection is Necessary

Although, the latest security standards are capable of protecting the data being transmitted over your home network, however, it is never a good idea to keep your Netgear extender running on the default passwords. By that, we are referring to the WiFi (network key) as well as the admin password of the extender. This is to inform you that the default password of the Netgear extender can be found anywhere. Thus, you should spare some time to change it. The admin password of the extender can be changed by accessing the Administration section whereas the WiFi password can be modified by visiting the Wireless Settings tab.

  1. Never Skip a Firmware Update

You might consider it as a joke but upgrading the firmware of the extender also improves the Netgear extender WiFi security. The reason is the introduction of the latest security features that help the Netgear extender to be compatible with recent threats. With that said, updating the firmware of the extender should be a major practice that needs to be followed by you no matter what. You can upgrade the firmware either by accessing mywifiext.local (iMac or Mac book) or via the mywifiext.net URL (Windows OS). However, you are also free to take the help of the Nighthawk application to get your extender upgraded to its newest firmware version.

  1. Create a Hidden Network

Going a level up and hiding the WiFi name of the Netgear extender will be beneficial for the security of your home network. Once you do that, the WiFi name of your extender gets concealed from the list of all the devices that are present within its range thereby making it an impossible task for unauthorized users to find and access your WiFi network. To hide the WiFi name (SSID) of the Netgear extender, you need to get to the BASIC Home screen and locate the Wireless Settings tab. Once you made it to that screen, uncheck the box saying Broadcast the Network SSID and see how the magic unfolds.

In Conclusion

A lot of users find themselves in a pickle when it comes to enhancing the Netgear extender network’s security. We hope that the information shared in this article will suffice to improve the Netgear extender WiFi security. However, we would also like to advise you to create a separate guest network on the home network. This way your guests won’t have access to the main network of your house and hence no chances of WiFi security breaches.
